Steps to Get Your Missouri Salesperson License
The Missouri Real Estate Commission (MREC) requires completion of the following steps in order to receive a Real Estate Salesperson License in Missouri.
The first step to obtaining a license is to complete the 72 hours of Missouri Pre-License Courses. These include the following two courses.
After completing the 72 hours of coursework, you must meet MREC's requirement of passing the course final exam with a score of 75% or higher.
Next, you must take and pass both the state and national portions of the Missouri Salesperson License Exam at a PSI Testing Center. The exam consists of the following two sections and has a total of 140 questions.
The National Portion of the exam contains 100 questions. Students must correctly answer a minimum of 70 out of 100 questions or a score of 70% or higher to pass this portion.
The State Section of the exam contains 40 questions. Students must correctly answer a minimum of 30 out of 40 questions or a score of 75% or higher to pass this portion.
You can schedule your exam with PSI online.
Once you have completed and passed your final exam, you will need to submit fingerprints by using IDEMIA (IdentoGO) and complete a Missouri state and federal criminal history background check.
Finally, you will need to apply for a license with the Missouri Division of Professional Registration (MDPR). The MDPR is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Becoming a real estate agent in Missouri involves several steps (outlined above) which can be moderately challenging depending on your background and dedication.
The difficulty of these steps can vary. The educational component requires time and effort to understand the material while passing the licensing exam can be challenging for some. The score needed to pass the Missouri Real Estate Salesperson Exam is 70%. While the exam is intentionally challenging, it's certainly not impossible to pass.
It's crucial to stay focused during your pre-license education and approach your study sessions with dedication. With the right amount of effort and preparation, you can achieve a passing score on your first try.
Additionally, finding a broker to sponsor you and succeeding in the competitive real estate field also presents its own challenges.
However, if you are committed and diligent, becoming a real estate agent in Missouri is a feasible goal. Just remember, it requires dedication to learning and a strong work ethic, especially when starting out in the real estate industry.
As of 2023, the average annual pay for a Real Estate Agent in Missouri is $72,444 a year. That works out to be approximately $34.83 an hour or $6,037 per month.
While the salaries range from as high as $140,232 and as low as $26,733, most Real Estate Agent salaries in Missouri currently range between $56,300 (25th percentile) to $93,800 (75th percentile) with top earners (90th percentile) making $120,533 annually in Missouri.

Missouri offers full license reciprocity with all 50 states and provides lesser requirements for licensed attorneys. Below are the requirements for current, out-of-state real estate licensees and attorneys.
Individuals with an active real estate license in another jurisdiction must complete the following steps to become a real estate salesperson.
Out-of-state licensees must first complete the 23-Hour Missouri Real Estate Practice Course (MREP). However, active licensees are not required to take the 48-Hour Pre-License Course
Out-of-State Licensees are required to pass both sections of the MO real estate exam.
Licensees must complete the application within six months of passing their exam. Additionally, out-of-state licensees must submit a current license certification from the state's real estate commission from which they are currently licensed.
Attorneys must complete the following steps to get their license.
Attorneys are required to pass the national and state sections of the licensing exam.
Attorneys must complete the application within six months of passing their exam and present a copy of their active BAR card with the application.
