New Proposals May Change Texas Real Estate License Education Rules

Education Statutory and Rule Changes that May Affect Real Estate License Holders in Texas

Current Requirements

Sales agents who are in their apprentice term (SAE) need to satisfy 270 hours of qualifying courses, prior to renewal.

You must take three hours of TREC Legal and three hours of TREC Ethics as part of your required CE for each renewal.

All designated brokers of business entities are required to take the broker responsibility course.

To renew your license on Active Status you must complete 15 hours of CE (formerly MCE) every license period.

What Will Change?

Sales agents in their apprentice year must also complete non-elective CE, TREC Legal Update I and II, before their first renewal.

You must complete four hours each of the TREC Legal Update I and II courses as part of your required CE for your renewal.

Designated brokers of business entities who sponsor agents must complete the broker responsibility course.

The Commission has proposed requiring 18 hours of CE every license period.

How does it affect my license in January 2016?

Prior to this change TREC non-elective CE courses were not required to be taken before a sales agent's first renewal. The TREC Legal update I and II courses are now required for your SAE renewal but do not count as part of the 270 hours of SAE.

The three hours TREC Legal and Ethics courses expire December 13, 2015. License holders that have not completed their required non-elective CE by this date must complete the new TREC Legal Update I and II courses before their renewal.

The designated broker of a business entity who does not sponsor agents will not have to take the broker responsibility course. This is a proposed rule that will be voted on by the Commission November 2nd.

You would need to take a total of 18 hours of CE every two years. This is a proposed rule that will be voted on by the Commission November 2nd.

New for 2016

All license holders can earn up to four hours of CE credit for attending the February meeting of the Commission one time every renewal period! This is a proposed rule that will be voted on by the Commission November 2nd.
