The Michigan Real Estate Appraisers Board has identified three levels of real property appraisal classification:
Limited Appraiser
State Licensed Appraiser
Certified Residential Appraiser
Certified General Appraiser
Michigan Appraiser License Requirements
The Michigan Board of Real Estate Appraisers has established the minimum educational requirements for an appraisal license. The minimum educational requirements include the following:
Limited Appraiser
Completion of a program of study for licensed appraisers of at least 75 hours of instruction which must include the 15 hr USPAP course.
College-level requirements: None
State Licensed Appraiser
Completion of a program of study for certified residential appraisers of at least 150 hours of instruction. Pass the state exam.
2,000 hours of appraisal experience including at least 1,500 hours of residential experience.
College-level requirements: None
Certified Residential Appraiser
Completion of a program of study for certified residential appraisers of at least 200 hours of instruction. Pass the state exam.
2,500 hours of appraisal experience including at least 2,000 hours of residential experience over at least 24 months
College-level requirements: Associate degree or higher. In lieu of the required degree, 21 semester credit hours covering the following subject matter courses: English Composition; Principles of Economics (Micro or Macro); Finance; Algebra, Geometry or higher mathematics; Statistics; Computer Science; and Business or Real Estate Law.
Certified General Appraiser
Completion of a program of study for certified general appraisers of at least 300 hours of instruction. Pass the state exam.
3,000 hours of appraisal experience including at least 1,500 hours of non-residential experience over at least 30 months
College-level requirements: Bachelors degree or higher. In lieu of the required degree, 31 semester credit hours covering the following subject matter courses: English Composition; Principles of Economics (Micro or Macro); Finance; Algebra, Geometry or higher mathematics; Statistics; Computer Science; and Business or Real Estate Law; and 2 elective courses in accounting, geography, ag-economics, business management, or real estate.
